The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey reported that the geopolitical crisis and "air sanctions" led to a sharp decrease in the number of Russian tourists: they arrived 48% less than in March 2021.
Russia's share in the total foreign tourist flow to Turkey has more than halved - from 24.24% to 10.91%, that is, for the first time in many years Russia was not even in the top three inbound markets of Turkey, said Ator.
The geopolitical crisis and "air sanctions" changed the picture of inbound tourism in Turkey in March. According to the data published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in March 2022, 114,384 Russian tourists arrived in Turkey. That is 52% of March 2021 (219,458 tourists).
Accordingly, the flow of tourists from Russia to Turkey in the first spring month fell by 48%, almost twice. Russia's share in the total foreign tourist flow to Turkey more than halved - from 24.24% to 10.91%.
At the same time, the total foreign tourist flow to Turkey in March 2022, compared with a year ago, more than doubled (905,323 foreign arrivals in March 2021 and 2,079,565 arrivals in March 2022).
In turn, the top five inbound markets of Turkey also changed in March. The first place in March was held by Iran (274,815 tourists), the second - by Germany (187,185), and the third - by Bulgaria (169,640). Russia was only on the 4th place, while Great Britain was on the fifth (87,349).
As for the distribution of Russian tourist flow to Turkey in March 2022, 79% (90,394 out of 114,384) of Russian tourists this month came to Istanbul. Given that this is even 3.3% more than in March 2021, the entire main blow (i.e. a two-fold reduction in the number of Russian arrivals) came from Antalya.
Only 20.8% of all Russians who came to Turkey in March (23,716 tourists from Russia) spent their holidays in Antalya. Last year twice as much.
Finally, only 274 trips of Russian citizens (0.2% of the total Russian tourist flow) were recorded on the Aegean coast of Turkey, in the province of Mugla (Mula). This is 70% less than the arrival of Russians in the province in March 2021 (900)..
At the same time the total volume of foreign tourist flow to Turkey in March 2022 compared to the period one year ago has more than doubled
